Family Tree Maker 2010; Does it Handle the Non Traditional Family?

Recently, I received an email from the folks at Family Tree Maker that touched upon a subject of non-traditional families posted here on this blog.
Here's the contents of that email:

There’s no such thing as a “typical” family. So how do you fit the quirks of your lineage into
your tree?

The new Family Tree Maker 2010 ®  Little Book of Answers can show you.

This invaluable companion to Family Tree Maker 2010 covers such tree-building quandaries as:

• Children born out of wedlock
• Entering information about a divorce
• Multiple spouses
• Unmarried parents
• Same-sex marriages
• Multi-word surnames
• Adding an adopted individual to your tree
• Adding an address for an individual
• Foreign language characters
• Exporting files
• Deleting a group of people
• And more

Get the Family Tree Maker 2010 Little Book of Answers and you’ll be ready for anything — or anyone — in your family tree that has you stumped.

This is good news!

Has anyone tried this version of the software for the purpose of incorporating non-tradition and blended families?
Does it work? Are you happy with it?

FTM 2010 comes bundled with the book for $39.95.
The price is right.

Please comment; tell us what you think.

Peace,

On Facebook, back on February 4th, Randy Seaver commented:

"George - in FTM2010 I was able to create a Partner relationship and have both parties be male or female. There are no labels like Father/Mother or Husband/Wife in the screens. Family Group Sheet calls both of them Spouses. In report, calls both partners "son" if male, but says they are "married" even if the relationship is set as "partners." More relationship neutral than LFT7 and RM4."

Gosh, something told me to go back and search Facebook - there may already be an answer to some of these questions! I forgot about this response.

Thanks again, Randy!

I have a lot of non-traditional families, and I figured out how to enter them in FTM 2010 without this book (I also just got that email!) Some of the tricky ones were two 18th century step-siblings who married, a relative with three marriages and one she wanted to record secretely (that worked out fine, doesn't show up on reports, etc.) cousin marriages, and two brothers who married two sisters in 1929. I also have just entered a partnership of two males, with an adoption. Phew! I'd like to get this book though, for the other things like multiword surnames, and foreign letters and accent marks...and exporting files (I called the 800 # last week to ask about that one!)

Hi Heather, How much different is FTM 2010 from FTM 2009? I still have a copy of FTM2009 and may just get the book without upgrading at this point. I still like Legacy more (although I question their sincerity in dealing with this issue). Family Tree Builder handles the problem, but I'm finding navigating in the program to be a little clunky.

I don't know, I went from 2006 to 2010 without stopping in between! Sorry I can't help you with a comparison.
